Advocacy

The Federation maintains a presence in Olympia to advocate community priorities to government decision makers. Over the years, Federation advocacy has delivered tangible results that have strengthened Jewish life, such as securing state funding for food assistance, health care, and other human services, as well as capital funding that has helped Jewish organizations to grow.

Engagement

Federation engagement programs open doors to Jewish life for people of all ages and interests.

  • PJ Library currently sends more than 1,700 local children free Jewish-themed books and music every month, and offers kids and parents a chance to build community through Neighborhood Song & Story events.
  • For people in their 30s and 40s, PAVE Seattle brings together people with shared interests: a book club, volunteer projects, and days at the ballgame, for example.
  • The Advanced Leadership Development Program, provided by the Federation, and the Wexner Heritage Program, funded by the Federation in partnership with the SAMIS Foundation, ensure that leadership ladders of Jewish agencies serving our community are well populated.
  • Scholarships reduce financial barriers, enabling children to go to camp, go on Israel experiences, and attend Jewish schools. The Federation plans to seek out other opportunities in which scholarships would lower cost barriers to participating in organized Jewish life.

Israel and World Jewry

Federation programs create people-to-people connections between Jews locally and abroad through trips to Israel and other Jewish communities, visits locally by Israeli camp counselors and emissaries, and helping Jews in need in Israel and elsewhere. The Federation’s successful Mission to Jewish Cuba earlier this year brought local travelers into closer touch with their own Jewish journeys and gave them inspiring stories to tell after they returned home. The Federation’s next planned mission is to Jewish Morocco in April 2016.

Jewish Legacy

Ensuring capacity to support programs and services for the long term is essential. The Federation will share the comprehensive LIFE&LEGACY program, supported by a grant from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, to provide Jewish agencies with training and other support to build solid financial foundations for serving the community for generations to come.
