After the Federation was attacked by an active shooter in 2006, a group of community leaders sat down to assess emergency preparedness. The tragedy was a call to action: Washington’s Jewish institutions needed a plan.
That meeting led to what is now known as SAFE Washington, a gateway between the Jewish community and local law enforcement, Homeland Security, FEMA, and the FBI. SAFE Washington offers preparedness trainings and provides resources.
Things have been quiet, but danger is never far from our minds. Recent lone wolf attacks and an uptick in anti-Semitic incidents around the world haven’t helped. A 2016 study released by the Community Security Service, a New York-based nonprofit similar in mission to SAFE Washington, notes that Jewish and Israeli institutions have been the targets of fewer attacks since 2000, but those attacks are more complex and more deadly.
