Seattle may have a vibrant foodie scene, but for kosher diners it may as well be a food desert. And while assisted-living facilities are more likely to conjure up the taste of chalky nutritional shakes than gourmet chicken over linguine, The Summit at First Hill might just be the peak of the city’s kosher experience.

The retirement home in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood runs a dairy café and meat restaurant for its residents as well as high-end public meat “Bistro Nights” every few months — but the lesser-known fact is that the café is open to the community daily. (And if you have an elder friend living there, you can join them for dinner nightly.)

On a recent afternoon, I hiked up to The Summit from downtown and ordered a small feast: baked macaroni and cheese, caprese eggplant melt, pesto portobello pizza, a honey apple salad, and a smoothie of more fruits and vegetables than I could keep track of. (Although I felt the need to vet the tuna melt and the Belgian waffle, I had to stop somewhere.) The soft-serve machine was down, but I was comforted to know that it exists. Instead, I left with a bag of homemade cookies from The Summit’s in-house baker. Everything was delicious, and my bill only came to $32.

The café serves dairy lunches every weekday and Sundays. No reservations needed.
