“My father taught us that it was critically important to understand our history and where we came from, and I think that emphasis pushed me in this direction. The work we do in Rwanda has a lot to do with conservation, education, and my desire to learn about the 1994 genocide. My [twin] sons’ fifth-grade assignment originally brought us to Rwanda, and tikkun olam is what keeps me there; I just want to leave the world a better place. I now go back and forth, spending 5 to 12 weeks at a time in Seattle and Rwanda. Splitting my time, I guess I’m both always home, and yet never at home.”
